What is a Blue Moon?

A Blue Moon is the name given to the second full moon in a month. A full moon occurs every 29.5 days, and not every 28 as most folk believe.  Time is a man made invention; nature does not abide by man's rules!  If there is a full moon on the 1st or 2nd day of a month, then it is possible that there will be a second full moon, a blue moon, that month.

In 1999, there were two blue moons and they were quite close to each other in January and March  We won't see two blue moons in one year a again until 2018.

There was a blue moon in November 2001, and in July 2004.

We have a blue moon in 2007. As you will notice in the above chart, there are two full moons in June (the month of the Honey Moon - see below).  The blue moon falls on 30th June.  It has been said that on  a blue moon you should take the opportunity to do something you’ve never done before, something out of character perhaps.  Also it is a double charger for your crystals, so get them on the windowsill!

Other Moons

HONEY MOON

The June full moon is called a mead or honey moon.  Derived from the hives being full of honey at this time of year.  The honey would have been fermented and made into mead.  Traditionally the honey drink was taken after a wedding ceremony held in the summer solstice.  This is where we get the idea of a June wedding whcih is followed by a honeymoon.

DARK MOON

A dark moon is where 2 new moons appear in one month the 2nd is called a dark moon.

HARVEST MOON

The full moon nearest to the autumn equinox is called a harvest moon.  This is because for several nights it appears large and bright in the early evening, bringing farmers valued extra time to gather their harvest.

MOON GODDESS

A popular Moon Goddess was Selene (or Luna) sister to Helios, the sun God.  Greek mythology called Artimis a virgin Goddess of the moon.  She rides her silver chariot across the sky and shoots her arrows of silver moonlight to the earth below.
